I always thought “Big Brother” was an Urban Legend, like Bigfoot. I was wrong. This person does exist, he is not a figment in my nightmares. I know this to be true because I met him. I am very frightened of him. I have a great deal of fear for myself and all of you!
He is a large, ominous, dark looming figure. He has beady, evil eyes and single horn atop his head. His breath is horrendous. He lurks over all of us knowing our secrets and searching for our vulnerabilities.
I met him this morning. He was monitoring my every keystroke on the computer. He followed me into cyberspace when I was on break. When I checked my FB acct, he did too. This “Big Brother” creature was able to see everything I posted – and even things others posted without my knowledge or approval. This beast was not welcome to be a “friend” on my social networking site, but he was there. Scrutinizing and judging.
This brings up many issues. How far should an employer go? I understand monitoring employee computer use, but is it ethical and fair to view their private accts? Trust issues arise – whats next, check my purse because it is sitting on a “company” desk?
I hope “Big Brother” enjoyed the email I sent to my mother this morning, and I hope enjoyed all my friends posts.
I am very angry and feel violated, do I have the right to feel this way, or should I just chalk it up to what the world has come to.
I think there should be limits, I was at break, obviously this was clear, as I am sure “big Brother” has time stamps on the files I peruse, and why keep my page open long after I have left? All of these questions have me befuddled.
One last thing: Remember, our lives are not our own once we leave the sanctuary of our homes. You relinquish all privacy rights – Big Brother with his horn and beady eyes is ready to pounce on you – BE CAREFUL!!!

It is scary and wrong. It is ok to monitor traffic while using thier server, but to read a FB acct is completely wrong, and a bit desperate if I may add!
ReplyDeleteI feel the employer has right to see what sights you are visiting and to make sure you are not abusing company time - but to check out a facebook account is seriously an invasion of privacy. How often do they read it, scary is right! Is it legal? I am going to do some research and see if it is legal to read private accounts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the posts guys. It is important to remember that when you go to work, you often have to sign an agreement that governs the use of company computer equipment that waives your right to privacy. Such agreements usually state that use will be monitored. Even if I didn't sign an agreement, that is not the issue. I really enjoy my job, the company, and the people I work with. I have nothing negative to say about any aspect of my job. I just wanted to vent and let others be forewarned. And if you are an employer, just be aware of your employees feelings. I do not take advantage of the internet at work and never would. I did expect my employer to respect my privacy. I learned a difficult lesson. I will definately be more careful in the future. The worst thing is there was a hurtful post that was not even put up by me. I suppose if you go snooping, expect to get your feelings hurt. Just like if I go on my private acct I should acccept the fact that someone else will be reading it. Trust has been shattered. I iwill get over past this (probably by the morning)
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! Is all I can say. Lord I can't imagine if my boss was reading mine. I would fired on the spot. You write nothing wrong. I hope you changed your password from home. YIKES I am still shocked by this post. I never though of what BB would look like, but you gave me a visual, I alwasy picked him as a old guy in a suit
ReplyDeleteWhile I can understand feeling violated... or that your privacy was invaded, you have to keep in mind that you are on a company computer. That's not your personal computer at work is it? It's one that the company provided you? And you're using your companies internet connection? My company makes it very clear to us that we are not to conduct personal business on the companies machine. Therefore, if they watch what I'm tying on my personal FB account... well I have no body to blame but myself. If I don't want them to see, I should do my FB-ing at home. Just an opinion.
ReplyDeleteAll opions matter kelly. And thanks for yours. I agree we should not be using the internet on company time, but I only use it at break. And once I am done wouldn't it have been great if my FB acct was left alone by my employer. There was a mean post tht someone wrote while my acct was minimized (not even sure who wrote it.) But stupid me commented on it becasue it was funny, and I took credit for it. It shouldn't matter anyway, It is MY FB acct and if you want to hack it, then don't be upset by what you read. I am over it now. It made me realizd that BB is everyhere. The horn headed beady eyed ogre is at the gym, the supermarket and my local wal-mart - YIKES!
